What Is Bounce Rate?

Your bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who land on your site and leave without clicking anything.

A bounce is when someone shows up on a page, looks at it for a few seconds, and closes the tab without visiting another page or clicking a button. High bounce rates usually mean the page didn't answer the visitor's question fast enough — or looked untrustworthy at a glance.

For contractors, a homepage bounce rate over 70% on mobile is a red flag. The most common causes are slow load times, no visible phone number above the fold, missing service area info (people can't tell if you serve their city), and stock photos that make the business look generic.

You don't have to obsess over the exact number. Watch the trend: if you make a change to the homepage and bounce rate drops while calls go up, keep the change.

Real example

An HVAC company's homepage took 6 seconds to load on a phone because of a huge unoptimized hero video. Bounce rate was 84%. Replacing the video with a compressed still image dropped the bounce rate to 58% and, more importantly, added 11 quote calls in the first month.
